Scout

Many of you have asked how my puppy, Scout, has been faring since his broken leg this summer. I thought I'd let you see for yourself!
He's bigger than it looks in this pic, but his leg is healed, he's running like a madman, and is active and healthy (and nudging me with a squeaky toy as I write) - although he does sit a little lopsided after 5 weeks with a cast on one side.

November writing news
Happy November greetings friends, family and faithful readers!
Let me start by letting you know that I’ve recently merged my various mailing lists together in an effort to streamline my writing activities. If you're not getting this newsletter directly, then you're missing out on my periodic Clean Out The Closet giveaway.* Go to www.joannebrokaw.com and join the mailing list to be entered.
Now, on with our regularly scheduled programming.
On Sunday, November 26th, I’ll be one of the celebrity hosts for an event at Water Street Music Hall to raise money for Erna’s Hope, an organization that promotes awareness for ovarian cancer. I think the definition of “celebrity” has been loosely defined in my case, but it’s a great cause so I’m excited to have been asked to participate. The event starts at 3 PM and goes until it ends. I’m hosting the second half; Kimberly and Beck from 98.9 The Buzz (real local celebrities) are hosting the first half. There will be music, food, and fun. For more information, visit http://www.waterstreetmusic.com and click “events” or email ernastickets@yahoo.com.
This month’s This Life column, One Ringy Dingy, is up at http://joannebrokaw.com/ThisLife.php. Yes, I am getting cranky in my old age.
My Missions for Chicken column focuses this week on the accusations that Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, has for the past three years engaged in drug use and sex with a male prostitute. What does that have to do with you? Read about it here. http://christianactivities.com/missions/story.asp?ID=6004
Many of you have asked about the Missions for Chickens book. A quick update: I had a veteran editor friend critique the proposal, and while I continue to get positive feedback on the idea, I am also continually warned that “missions books don’t sell” - meaning that it has very little chance of ever getting published. I’ve been advised to find an organization that can champion the book (ie: promise to buy a lot of them to give away or sell to members), which will give the idea weight if it ever gets to a publishing house. I know that several of you involved in missions are anxiously waiting for me to write this book, so keep praying for guidance on this one. I’m kind of at a loss as to what to do next.
Don’t forget to check out the What’s Up Entertainment blog for reviews and music news. Recent posts include reviews of “The Queen” and “Flags of our Fathers” as well as the monthly Entertainment Notes. http://joannebrokaw.com/WhatsUp.php
I had an eventful week at American Greetings, where I learned a lot about writing humorous greeting cards - namely that it’s really hard work and not always funny. It was an excellent opportunity and I’m hoping to be able to apply what I learned so that I can sell more cards (which was the whole point of the trip).
* Finally, next month, I’ll announce the winner(s) in the first Clean Out The Closet random giveaway. Up for grabs: “The Nativity Story: Sacred Songs” soundtrack from the film; Amy Grant’s “Time Again” all access DVD, featuring 22 songs and concert footage; and the Top 25 Modern Praise and Worship DVD, featuring popular songs and inspiring video footage. On November 15th I’ll pick three names from all subscribers on this mailing list and notify them by email. Please encourage your friends and family to join the mailing list so they can not only keep up on my wildly exciting news, but maybe get some free goodies as well!
As always, I am truly grateful for your support and prayers!
All the best,
Joanne Brokaw

So last night I watched March of the Penguins. (I know, I'm like the only person in American who hasn't seen it yet.) In the beginning of the story, Morgan Freeman says that Antarctica used to be a tropical climate, but then the glaciers moved south and viola, perennial ice age. Later, one of the extra documentaries shows scientists investigating the effects of global warming on Antarctica, because the ice is melting and making life difficult for those cute little Emperor penguins.
At the risk of admitting my scientific stupidity, I have to ask:
Since we've only been keeping weather records for a couple of hundred years, how do we know that Antarctica used to be a warm climate millions of years ago?
And if scientists are so sure that it was once warm, isn't it possible that the current warming is simply a return to the natural state of the region? Maybe global warming isn't a bad thing, but the natural thing. Maybe?
Just curious.
